Effective April 21, 2023, the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment is adding 1,1,1-Trichloroethane and Leucomalachite Green to the list of chemicals known to the state to cause cancer for purposes of the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (Proposition 65). 1,1,1-trichloroethane is mainly used as a solvent, degreaser. Manufacture for domestic use banned in US since 2002. Leucomalachite green is used as a dye precursor to malachite green (Gessner & Mayer, 2000). Other uses of leucomalachite green include as a reagent in several analytical applications, e.g. for the quantitative colorimetric determination of hemoglobin and other hem compounds in forensic science. The warning requirement for significant exposures to these chemicals will take effect on April 21, 2024.
