US – The First Settlement of Bisphenol A (BPA) in Socks under Proposition 65

​On October 13, 2021, Center for Environmental Health (CEH) served 60-day Notices of Violation under Proposition 65 to Settling Defendant, the California Attorney General, the District Attorneys and the City Attorneys in the State of California. The Notice alleges violations of Proposition 65 with respect to the presence of BPA in socks made primarily of polyester with spandex. On May 15, 2022, a settlement for this court case released as the first settlement for BPA in socks under the Proposition. The limit for BPA in socks was set at 1 ppm with the specific test method stated in the Exhibit A of the settlement: ​Obtain homogenized 1 gram sample of the sock by shredding the entire sock and taking a representative 1-gram sample of the shreds ​Add the 1-gram sock sample to 10 ml of acetonitrile Heat the solution using a hot plate for 3 hours at 40 degrees Celsius Analytical method – Isotope dilution LC-Tandem MS (LC-MS) Reporting the BPA concentration in mg/kg (ppm)
