Switzerland – Update on Ordinance Regarding Food Contacting Materials and Articles

​On July 8, 2026 the Switzerland Federal Office for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs published an update on the Ordinance of the Federal Department of Home Affairs (DFI) on materials and objects intended to come into contact with foodstuffs. Materials and objects not yet compliant with the new rules (amendment dated June 19, 2026) are granted a transition period. They may still be imported, manufactured, labeled under the old law till August 1, 2027. They may also be delivered/sold to consumers until August 1, 2027. Reusable materials and finished articles that: contain substances listed under entry 136, Table 1, Annex 2 or entry 136, Table 1, Annex 10 (as per the November 13, 2024 amendment), or do not comply with requirements of Annex 13, Chapter 2 or Annex 14 (as per the June 2, 2025 amendment), may still be Imported, manufactured, labeled, and placed on the market under previous law until July 20, 2026, and delivered to consumers until July 20, 2027. Other updates include: – Annex 2 and 10 are amended, – Annexes 4 on conformity assessment related to migration limits of plastic materials and articles is amended, – Annex 5 on quality assurance system in food contact plastics recycling facilities is replaced by the attached version, – Annex 13 amendment on specific requirements for varnishes and coatings​. This Ordinance shall enter into force on August 1, 2026.
